Mission Begins
with “Sending”

Called Together / Sent Together

Good Shepherd MissionInternational Director Rev. Kyoung Sik Kim

Mission is not only the story of those who travel to distant nations. Some go, while others pray, support, and walk with them. Through the original meaning of mission—“sending”—we reflect on GSM’s 1:1 mission partnership.

When we hear the word mission, we often think first of missionaries who travel to distant countries to proclaim the gospel. That is certainly an important expression of mission.

Yet the meaning of the word itself carries a simple and essential truth: mission begins with sending.

The Latin word missio, the root of the English word “mission,” means sending or commissioning. Scripture repeatedly shows God calling and sending people.

God sent Moses to Egypt, sent the prophets to His people, and Jesus sent His disciples into the world.

“As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.”— John 20:21

This verse clearly reveals the heart of mission. Mission is not first something we begin because of personal desire; it is our response to God’s call and sending.

But are only those who leave for the mission field sent? I do not believe so.

Some go to the field. Others pray, support, and stand with them. GSM calls those serving in the field frontline missionaries, and those who pray, support, and partner with them backline missionaries.

Their locations and responsibilities differ, but both participate in the same mission.

For this reason, GSM’s 1:1 mission partnership means far more than one person sending financial support to one missionary. It builds a lasting relationship in which people know one another by name, pray for one another, stay in contact, and share both joy and hardship.

One of the deepest struggles on the mission field is loneliness.

Knowing that someone remembers you gives remarkable strength. For the backline missionary, seeing how prayer and support touch a missionary’s life and ministry makes mission personal rather than distant.

This is the vision GSM has carried through the years: 1:1 mission partnership connecting the frontline and backline.

Mission is never a solitary work.

Some go, and some send.

Some pray, and some support.

God connects them all in one mission.

We are called together,
and we are sent together.

Even if we cannot personally travel to a mission field, remembering one missionary, praying, encouraging, and walking together is precious mission.

GSM will continue serving as a bridge so that frontline and backline missionaries can know one another, pray for one another, and fulfill God’s mission together.
